Why this challenge?
Is your smartphone the first thing you reach for when you wake up and the last thing you put away before going to sleep? You’re not the only one. Many people find it difficult to use their phones in a healthy way. That’s not surprising when you consider how much we can do with them, but also the impact they can have on us. Excessive smartphone use affects your concentration, productivity, creativity, and how calm you feel.
We all notice it: the Netherlands has become deeply connected to the smartphone. We worry about it, but often don’t know how to do things differently. That’s why it’s time for action.
Not because we are against smartphones — they also bring many benefits — but because we have become too dependent on them.
The goal: you are in control of your smartphone, instead of your smartphone being in control of you.
The rules
- Use your smartphone for a maximum of 30 minutes per day, and only for things that truly cannot be done without your phone. Examples include checking a school or sports club group chat for essential information, arranging something for your studies or with the government, or controlling your smart home.
- Making phone calls is allowed!
- Medical apps are always allowed.
- Listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks through your phone is allowed.
- Using your phone for navigation is allowed. However, feel free to try doing this in another way as well.
- Do you have a work phone? Discuss with your employer that you are taking part in the “Put Your Phone Away Challenge” and explain the rules. It would be great if you could participate at work as well. Even better, encourage your employer and colleagues to join too!
- Can you genuinely not work without your smartphone, for example because you manage your administration through your phone or need to be reachable via WhatsApp? Then use your smartphone only for those purposes and avoid using it for anything else.
Extra challenge: Try not to use social media this week either — not even on your laptop or desktop — and see what effect it has on you.
