Helping People Help Themselves

Do you know how to help somebody? It would be easier if people allowed us to help that is for sure. The truth of the matter is, we have no control over another person – that’s their job.

At Raja Psychologie we see ourselves more as a supporters, motivators or coaches. Within that role we try to stimulate the clients to think about what they find important in their lives, what they are motivated by and what they can do themselves to realize changes.

As we fix ourselves, we have less baggage, less hurt, and can be more compassionate towards others because, on some level, we can relate to what they are going through. Our mission at Raja Psychologie is to help clients to help themselves.

Can somebody fix you? People might provide good advice, but ultimately you have to take the action steps and continue the walk. Nobody can do this walk for you.

Because people are so different, in us giving advice to them, it is really us telling them what we would do if we were them, but we aren’t them. Each person is the authority of themselves.

At Raja Psychologie our focus is: Self-direction. Self-direction is about making your own decisions about your life and care and support in doing so. It is the ability to arrange your own life and necessary support and the practical ability to manage yourself physically, socially and psychologically.

Self-direction involves the following four aspects:

  • Starting from the positive: What can I do as a client? Where does my strength lie?
  • Strengthening the client through insight into his own motivations and situation: In which areas are things going well? In which areas are things not going so well? What do I still want to be able to do or do again?
  • Leaving the client as much as possible in control of support and assistance: What do I want to do with my life? What do I want to work on? What help do I need for this? And what do I want that help to look like?
  • Strengthening and involving informal and social networks.
